New Pollen analysis – Judgement according to variable literature

The judgement of unifloral honey by pollen analysis is done in accordance with the requirements of EC honey directive (2001/110/EC) according to which unifloral honeys must have certain microscopic, physical-chemical and organoleptic characteristics. In Germany many unifloral honeys are regulated in the German Guideline for honey in more detail. Beside the minimum pollen content, the F/G-ratio, electrical conductivity, colour and sensory properties are regulated. This Guideline for honey only applies in Germany.

In other European countries there are similar regulations like the German guideline for honey, where these requirements for unifloral honeys are also specified. For example, in Spain there is „Guía de mieles monoflorales ibéricas“. Sometimes these requirements are different to the ones applied in Germany. So it could happen that the judgement of a honey sample might be different depending on the basis for assessment. For example if a honey sample contains 16 % of orange pollen and a methylanthranilate concentration of 1.7 mg/kg, this sample would in Germany be classified as “Blossomhoney with Orange honey”. According to Spanish or Italian guidelines this sample would comply with the regulations for unifloral Orange honey.

In order to pay attention to these different regulations, QSI offers a new pollen analysis code. The determination itself is equal but the judgement is not according to German Guideline for honey but in accordance to variable literature from other European countries. You can tell us, which literature we should take into account for our judgement and we will also report this literature in our test reports.

You can order this new pollen analysis using our analysis code 218. Additionally we offer group packages for Heather honey (analysis code 36281) and Orange honey (analysis code 36282), in order to consider special chemical characteristics of these honeys, which are included in the group package. Also you can order our group package 36280, where the determination of F/G ratio is included. This could be useful for e.g. Rape honey or Acacia honey.
